William "Bill" Coombs
Bill Coombs passed away at age 83 on Thursday, October 11, 2018 after a period of declining health. He was a long-time member of Chapter 54 (D488) and participated in many of the functions of and in various officer positions of the chapter. Bill was a retired SGM who served 30 years with the U.S. Army.
After graduating from high school he joined the United States Army. Almost half of his Army service was with Special Forces units. He was a Master Parachutist. He served multiple tours in Vietnam as well as time with 'Det A' in Berlin. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and the Legion of Merit.
Bill was a graduate of the Hawaii Pacific University. He was a member of many different organizations and associations to include the Special Forces Association, the Elks, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Berlin Military Veterans Association, the Combat Infantryman's Association, the Moose, the Enlisted Association, and the Sergeants Major Association.
In 2018 Chapter 54 recognized Bill for his unwavering support and leadership to the chapter with an award of the 'Malcolm Kalp Award'. Bill was the chapter Director of Communications for over 20 years as well as performing other duties and responsibilities to further the goals and objectives of the chapter.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Waltham, Massachusetts and his burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts.
