Peaks Island Cookout

Map Portland Harbor Maine OSM

Saturday, June 6, 2026

Chapter 54 held, with our invited GB Friends from Maine as well...our first and very special New England style lobster/clam bake with steamers and all the usual sides, on scenic Peaks Island, Maine off the coast of Portland on June 6, 2026!!

For months now, our Brother Fran O'Leary, a resident of Peaks Island, had been carefully planning all of the details for this incredible event. We had 82 Chapter members and guests attend this event.

We met Saturday morning, in Portland, Maine at a public parking lot, then ferried by cars to the Peaks Island Ferry Boat terminal, and boarded the ferry for the 15-minute ride to Peaks Island.

Once on Peaks Island, we traveled by golf car or walked to the site of the cookout, the historic Greenwood Gardens, with views of the ocean, the Portland skyline, and the other Casco Bay islands. We were treated to a guest lecture about the historic role of Peaks Island in WW II. Then we enjoyed several hours of food and fellowship with our GB Brothers and Friends. Lemonade, water, and a selection of beer were provided.

Golf Cart Tours and History Lecture. Several Peaks Island residents offered 1/2 hour long Golf Cart tours of Peaks Island, pointing out historical locations and relating stories of the history of Peaks Island - to include its role in the defense of Casco Bay during World War II. Peaks Island was once one of the most popular summer resorts on the east coast. The island still supports a large summer colony.

Greenwood Gardens is called "Portland's Little Treasure" and is a major event site for weddings and similar celebrations. The gardens are owned by the Peaks Island Lions Club, and thanks to their support for the veteran's community, we were given a steep discount for our event. In addition, we received an incredible gift of $10,000 donation from one of our own Chapter 54 friends, who has chosen to remain anonymous. The event ended up costing $7,000, leaving a balance of $3,000 to help offset costs of future Chapter events, per the wishes of the donor.

Thanks to the generosity of our Chapter 54 anonymous Friend, the Peaks Island Lions Club, and Fran O'Leary's initiative and careful planning, what would usually be a cost-prohibitive event was made FREE to all Chapter 54 Members and 1 guest, and our GB Brothers in Maine as well!!
