Jim Fitzgerald
Chapter 54 member Jim
Fitzgerald (MSG Ret.), D4160, passed away Tuesday, 22 August
2017 at the age of 79. He was home recovering from some health
issues when he passed. The funeral was held on
Saturday, 26 August 2017 at the Carr Funeral Home in
Charlestown, Massachusetts with a funeral mass at St. Mary’s Church in
Charlestown, Massachusetts. His burial was held at the
Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Massachusetts. MSG Fitzgerald is
survived by his wife Frances, daughters Kathleen, Michelle, and
Linda and brother John (CW3 Ret.), a Chapter 54 member.

Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956 and attended basic
training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He attended advanced infantry
training and Airborne School and subsequently served with the
101st Airborne Division. He was discharged from the active Army
in 1963. After his active duty service he joined A Company,
11th Special Forces Group (Reserves) in Boston, Massachusetts.
Jim continued his service with Company A, 1st Battalion, 11th
Special Forces Group when it was established at Fort Devens,
Massachusetts.
During his time with Special Forces he served as a Light
Weapons Sergeant, Heavy Weapons Sergeant, Intelligence
Sergeant, and Operations Sergeant. His awards and decorations
include the EIB, MSM with OLC, ACM, MM, AGCM, USARAM, NDSM,
AFRM, CWVM, Master Parachutist Badge, and Jungle Expert Badge.
In addition, he was awarded the Canadian, British, German, and
French Parachute Wings. He retired from the service in 1988
with 32 years of service.
Jim was also a long-time member of the Boston Fire
Department. His time with the Fire Department started in 1972.
At various times during his fire department career he served as
the Past President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Historian
for the Boston Firefighters Union Local #718. He was a member
of the Boston Fire Department SCUBA Team as well. He retired
from the Boston Fire Department in January 2002 following 30
years of service to the City of Boston.
